From canvas to mug: how I transfer my art onto everyday objects

"The fusion of art and subtlety revealed through everyday objects." — O'Shiny
What is the transfer of art onto everyday objects?
Transferring your art onto an everyday object means extending an original work beyond the canvas to anchor it in real life. A painting hanging on a wall is contemplated. A hand-painted mug, on the other hand, is held, used, and felt every morning.
At O'Shiny Art & Lifestyle, this idea is at the heart of every creation: making art accessible, tactile, and alive. Each pattern you see on a mug or a cushion cover is directly inspired by an original painting created in the studio — in gouache, acrylic, or pointillism.
Pattern directly inspired by O'Shiny's work titled "Elevation"
Why transpose your paintings onto objects? The O'Shiny Art & Lifestyle philosophy
For years, I painted canvases. Spiritual, meditative works, rooted in travel and emotions. Series such as Envolée Spirituelle (Spiritual Flight), Immersive, or Ocean Dream Present — entire universes distilled into colors and gestures.
But I asked myself a question: why should art remain inaccessible?
An original canvas is unique, precious, sometimes intimidating to acquire. A hand-painted mug or a printed cushion, however, enters daily life effortlessly. It leaves a touch of art where it was least expected — on a morning table, in an office, in the hands of someone you love.
It is this conviction that gave birth to O'Shiny Art & Lifestyle: art should not remain hanging on walls. It should travel with you.
How does art transfer onto a mug work? The two techniques used
Hand-painting: the most intimate technique
The first method is the most direct: I paint each cup by hand, piece by piece, in my studio.
The process follows several precise steps:
- The sketch — Each pattern begins on paper. I draw the composition taking into account the curved shape of the mug, the available surface, and the desired visual effect.
- Choosing the colors — As with my canvases, the colors are chosen with intention. The deep purple (#1a0a3d) and emerald (#043d2c) that structure the O'Shiny universe are naturally found in the ceramic creations.
- Applying layers — I work in successive layers, with the same pigments and brushes I use on canvas. Each layer dries before the next. The movement is slow, precise, repeated.
- Finishing touches — Once the pattern is finished, the piece is treated to ensure the durability of the paint on the ceramic.
Two cups with the same pattern will never be strictly identical. That is precisely what makes them unique pieces.
Sublimation: art printed with photographic precision
The second technique is textile and ceramic sublimation — a printing method that transforms special ink into gas under the effect of heat, to embed it directly into the fibers or the surface of the medium.
How does sublimation work?
- The original work is first scanned and reworked in high resolution (300 DPI minimum).
- The pattern is printed on transfer paper with sublimation inks.
- This paper is applied to the object (mug, tote bag, pouch, cushion cover), then heated under a press at a high temperature for a precise amount of time.
- The ink turns into gas and integrates permanently into the medium — with no added thickness, no film, and no risk of peeling.
The result: vibrant colors, faithful to the original work, resistant to washing and time.
This technique is used for O'Shiny Art & Lifestyle printed collections — ceramic mugs, tote bags, makeup pouches, and cushion covers.

What is the difference between a hand-painted mug and a sublimation-printed mug?
| Hand-painted | Sublimation | |
|---|---|---|
| Technique | Brushes and pigments applied directly | Thermal ink embedded with heat |
| Uniqueness | Each piece is unique, never identical | Faithful and precise reproduction of the pattern |
| Rendering | Visible texture, relief of the brushstroke | Smooth surface, photographic rendering |
| Durability | Protective treatment applied | Very resistant to washing |
| Production | Made-to-order, one piece at a time | Made-to-order, limited series |
| Certificate | Yes, with a unique serial number | Yes, with a unique serial number |
Both methods share the same requirement: each O'Shiny Art & Lifestyle creation is produced on demand, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity mentioning its unique serial number.
From the original work to the object: my 5-step process
Whether it is for a hand-painted cup or a sublimated object, each creation follows the same artisanal creative process:
Step 1 — The initial sketch: Everything starts in the notebook. I draw the composition, explore shapes, and define color zones. This is where the idea takes shape.
Step 2 — The gouache mockup: I create a scale model in gouache. This step allows me to test colors and refine proportions before moving on to the final medium.
Step 3 — The digital mockup: For sublimated creations, the model is then scanned and reworked in Illustrator or Photoshop at 300 DPI. This step guarantees perfect color reproduction during printing.
Step 4 — Client presentation: For custom orders or B2B collaborations (such as my collection created for the Barbera e Tulipani guesthouse in Italy), I present a formal mockup before starting production.
Step 5 — Prototype and production: Finally comes manufacturing: hand-painting or sublimation printing, finishing, quality control, numbering, and the issuance of the certificate of authenticity.
Why this process guarantees art objects in their own right
Each step of this process is designed so that the final object is not just a derivative product, but an authentic extension of the original work.
The blue color you see on an O'Shiny Art & Lifestyle mug is exactly the same as the one present in the Elevation painting. The artistic intent does not stop at the canvas — it extends to the object.
This is why every creation comes with a certificate of authenticity. Not as a marketing gesture, but as a promise: you are holding in your hands a piece that has a story, an origin, a soul.
Frequently asked questions about art transfer onto objects
Can I order an object with a custom design? Yes. I offer entirely personalized made-to-order creations — pattern, colors, medium. Each piece is discussed and validated before production. Discover custom creations →
Are hand-painted mugs dishwasher safe? Hand-painted cups are treated for durability, but I recommend hand washing to preserve the colors and the longevity of the piece. Sublimated mugs are dishwasher safe.
What is the manufacturing and delivery time? Handmade items have a 8-business-day lead time, including manufacturing and delivery, unless in stock, which is 48 business hours for delivery.
Are the objects available for B2B? Yes. O'Shiny Art & Lifestyle offers personalized collections for professionals (hotels, guesthouses, designer boutiques). My collaboration with Barbera e Tulipani is a concrete example. Find out more →
Conclusion — Art that enters your life
From canvas to mug, the path is made of gestures, colors, and intentions. It is not a reproduction. It is not a gadget. It is a way of living with art — of holding it in your hands, starting the day with it, giving it to someone who deserves more than the ordinary.
At O'Shiny Art & Lifestyle, every object is conceived as a work of art in its own right: produced on demand, numbered, certified, irreplaceable.
Because the ordinary, too, deserves to be extraordinary.
